New Address in HRI's Future?
by Cathe Morrow
Any of you who have been to our office in the last year or so will know that we are in real need of more space. Between regular staff and volunteers the office is bursting at the seams. I should begin by pointing out we are very grateful to Fairleigh Dickinson University for all the help they have given us over the years.
Unfortunately, the time has come for us to consider relocating our main office. Some of you may remember from our Winter 2000 newsletter our plan to convert the historic Banta Coe House on the Fairleigh Dickinson Campus to the Hackensack River Resource Center. Due to conflicts arising at the university we will not be able to complete that plan and so we will have to move off campus. With the cooperation of the University we hope to maintain the office on campus as a laboratory and student outreach center for Hackensack Riverkeeper.
So now the news. We made an offer, which has been accepted for a property on Main Street in Hackensack. You might have known it as Harrow Stationery. While it is still very early in the process, we thought you would be interested to know our plans. If the purchase is completed we will relocate our main office to that location. We followed our own advise and chose that site to help redevelop urban areas and to give us a front door presence in the watershed.
If all goes as planned we'll need your help and support more than ever. The building we are talking about is currently one big enclosed space, which is not surprising since it was a store. Its conversion to office space will take some work. We'll be calling all plumbers, electricians (including solar power specialists), carpenters, architects, painters and anybody else who can lend a hand in general indoor construction.
If you can help, please call the office and we will be happy to put you on a list so we can get in touch with you directly once we are ready to get started.
It's going to be a lot of work, but it's going to be great!
