ACTION ALERT

Oscillation on the Flats

"Rocking chairs and hammocks and hearts each have their own unique periods of vibration." –E.G. Valens, THE NUMBER OF THINGS.

Hammocks and hearts vibrate,
and doors with rusty hinges
on the meadow shacks.
Oars scrape in the oarlocks,
Squeaky music on the Hackensack.
All of Newark Bay
moves slowly back and forth
like water carried in a basin.
The rower pulls,
pulls hard to float
past steel tracks and oil tanks
against the wind,
past swamp grass, TV towers, sun-
flowers and the poorhouse on Snake Hill,
floating, pulling, breathing deep,
before tides turn
day's rippling river
to dark unmoving ground.
