Hackensack Riverkeeper Welcomes New Trustees Aboard

By Hugh M. Carola

The Board of Trustees of Hackensack Riverkeeper® unanimously approved at its September meeting, the addition of Constance Hill of Englewood and Virginia Anne Korteweg of River Edge to the board. There are now 10 Trustees on the Board who are full voting members in addition to Captain Bill Sheehan, executive director of Hackensack Riverkeeper®, who serves as a nonvoting member.

Expanding the board follows the resignation of founding trustee Alice Allured of Secaucus. Alice and her husband, William Allured, remain active supporters of our organization and continue to live near the river they love.

“As Hackensack Riverkeeper® grows and takes on more responsibilities, it’s important for us to continually attract dedicated people to serve as Trustees–people as dedicated as Alice,” explained Captain Bill. “She set a wonderful example for all of us and we’ll miss her at meetings.”

The Board serves as the governing body of the organization. It approves financial expenditures, engages in strategic planning and oversees Hackensack Riverkeeper’s® policies and positions.

Connie Hill (left) holds a Master’s Degree from Boston University and recently retired from the Leonia, NJ, public school system after having served for 20 years as a guidance counselor in the Middle School. Prior to working in Leonia, she taught math and reading in New York City for eight years. Throughout her career, Connie used every available opportunity to stress personal health and environmental awareness to her students - often in creative and proactive ways. She is enjoying an active retirement with her husband, Calvin Hill.

Virginia Korteweg (right) is the co-founder and president of the Greater River Dell Chamber of Commerce and co-owner of Coachworks Rolls Royce, Inc. with her husband, Anthony “Bud” Korteweg. Virginia is well-known for her extensive philanthropic endeavors in the fields of conservation, education, healthcare, civic responsibility and the arts. She actively serves on the boards of numerous foundations and organizations. Somehow in the midst of her very busy schedule; Virginia found time last year to become a Rutgers University-trained Master Gardener.

“A strong Board of Trustees makes for a strong organization,” said Captain Bill. “We’re fortunate to have such a wonderful group of people working with us on behalf of everyone who lives in our watershed.”
