This year marks the Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, NJ by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, an Irish religious order. One of the unique ways the school has chosen to celebrate that milestone is by recognizing the accomplishments of fifty people who have also helped shape Bergen County since 1956. One of those so honored at a special awards luncheon on October 6 was Captain Bill Sheehan. Like him, all of the awardees have either familial or career ties in Bergen County and all were selected in large measure due to their roles in support of education.

"When I started Hackensack Riverkeeper and began doing environmental education, I knew it was the right thing to do," explained Captain Bill. "What I didn't know at the time was the extent to which our role as educators would influence policy decisions here in Bergen County."

The event took place at the Knickerbocker Country Club in Tenafly; ironically just one day after our own Awards Celebration and Sustainable SeafoodFest was held at the same venue. After welcoming remarks by Br. Lawrence T. Murphy, C.F.C., the school's president and a keynote address by NJ Senate President (and former Governor) Richard J. Codey and lunch, the awardees were called up to receive their awards.

In addition to Captain Bill, some of the other notable awardees were author Mary Higgins Clark, former WABC disk jockey Harry Harrison, musician Ben E. King, guitar legend Les Paul, General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former U.S. Congresswoman Marge Roukema. Hackensack Riverkeeper actually had two awardees at the event - in addition to Captain Bill, Riverkeeper Trustee Nancy Wysocki was honored for her many years of service on behalf of environmental causes in Bergen County, including our own.

"For all you have done for the people of Bergen County, thank you," said Brother Murphy to the assembled honorees. "For the world that you have created and continue to create, thank you."
