WMA 5 Ambassador Update

New Ambassador from the North

by Margaret Chabot

Hello New Jersey! My name is Margaret Chabot and I am the newest addition here at Hackensack Riverkeeper. I am your new AmeriCorps / NJ Department of Environmental Protection Watershed Ambassador. As you may already know, there are 20 of us working throughout the state, each in a different Watershed Management Area (WMA) and each hosted by a different agency. In WMA-5, which covers the Hackensack and Hudson River watersheds, I am fortunate to be hosted by my new friends at Hackensack Riverkeeper. Now for a little bit about myself…

My hometown is Linneus, Maine (yeah, way up in the northeastern part of the state). I graduated earlier this year from the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and a minor in Creative and Fine Arts. Going to a school situated on the coast of Maine certainly had its advantages for me as I was able to focus my studies on coastal wetlands and salt marsh vegetation. After graduation, I interned for the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve in Wells, Maine as a member of their Watershed Evaluation Team (WET). I also worked as an assistant in their education department. That experience led me to apply for the New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors Program. My goal here is to use my education and experience for the betterment of this watershed area and its people.

During this program year, I will be conducting visual and biological assessments on local waterways in this area. The data that I collect will be processed by the DEP to determine if those waterways are in distress. I will also be available to train anyone who would like to be a part of the Volunteer Monitoring Program, an initiative that covers the entire state. In addition to doing the training, I am also available to give informative presentations about why it is important to monitor and protect our local waters.

Education has always pulled me towards teaching people, especially kids, about the environment they live in. Through this program I will connect with educators, students, and citizens groups within WMA-5 to set up opportunities for this education to happen. With this knowledge, hopefully people will gain a better understanding of what they can do in their communities to help keep their waters clean and be good watershed citizens.

My tenure here will only be successful if I can reach the people of northeast New Jersey and obtain their help. If people are willing to learn and lend a hand, I am more than willing to do what I can to give back. Please contact me if you would like more information about our AmeriCorps programs and services or to schedule a presentation. And thanks for welcoming me to your state!
