Hackensack Riverkeeper Presents

NJ Audubon’s Freiday On Birding in Meadowlands

As part of a major collaboration with the New Jersey Audubon Society to promote birding and eco-tourism in the Meadowlands, Hackensack Riverkeeper sponsored two special talks on Thursday, May 20, by Don Freiday, director of New Jersey Audubon Society’s Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary in Bernardsville. Both talks focused on bird-watching opportunities in the New Jersey Meadowlands. Freiday’s organization expertly stewarded Cape May’s growth as a major birding and eco-tourism destination.

Freiday made a presentation to members of the Tourism Committee of Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce on “Capitalizing on the Potential of Bird-Watching in the NJ Meadowlands.” He discussed the vast potential of eco-tourism to the region, and explained the infrastructure improvements and marketing efforts necessary for the initiative to take flight.

That evening, Freiday gave a free public presentation on “Birding in the NJ Meadowlands: The Next Cape May?” He discussed the vast and varied bird-watching opportunities in the Meadowlands.

Hackensack Riverkeeper will again collaborate with New Jersey Audubon Society on the first-ever Meadowlands Birding Festival, scheduled for Sunday, October 17, at the Meadowlands Environment Center in Lyndhurst. The day-long event will consist of walking tours, boat rides, guided paddles, talks, demonstrations and activities for all ages, and for all levels of birding expertise.
