WMA 5 Ambassador Update:

Get Ready For The Watershed-Wide Clean-Up!

by Elyse Levy

The spring has finally come and it is time to get outside and have some fun. This is a great time to enjoy nature, the bright green leaves, the beautiful flowers and the singing birds. Even under a coating of cans, bottles and litter, there is an underlying beauty, but we do not have to put up with this! That’s why you should come join the Watershed Wide Cleanup and Recreation Day, to help take back the river from its winter coating of litter that has washed down through the watershed.

Litter is a form of non-point source pollution, where basically any manmade product–bottles, cans, wrappers, cigarette buts, bags, tires, sports equipment–that is not disposed of properly (i.e. either recycled or thrown in the garbage) can wash down storm drains. Once in the stream, aquatic animals can mistake some of these items for food. Most items take many years to degrade, especially plastics, which stay in the environment practically forever.

On May 13, in locations throughout the watershed, groups will be joining Hackensack Riverkeeper and Hackensack Clean Communities for the Watershed-Wide Cleanup and Recreation Day as part of National River Cleanup Week. (See the ad below.) After cleaning up the litter in our watershed, we will all join together at Johnson Park in Hackensack to enjoy the great outdoors with an afternoon of festivities, including food, games and, of course, watershed education.

There is still time to register your group. Just call the office and we will send you more information. It’s beautiful outside, but there is always room for improvement. Our watershed needs our help, and the Watershed-Wide Cleanup and Recreation Day is a great way to be part of the effort.
