COME ENJOY THE CHANGE OF SEASONS AT MEHRHOF POND

Four Fall Eco-Walks Scheduled

This year, we at Hackensack Riverkeeper are offering a series of four Saturday morning Eco-Walks at the Mehrhof Pond Nature Trail in Little Ferry, New Jersey. The trail winds through 100 acres of mixed habitat surrounding Mehrhof Pond, including some of the last remaining woodlands in southern Bergen County. The easy, 1.5-hour walk also takes us along the shores of our watershed's most uniquely-created waterbody.

I hope you'll join me on one of these Eco-Walks, especially if you enjoy birdwatching. Last year we observed migrating warblers and sparrows, resident herons and egrets, hawks (including an immature Bald Eagle!) and thousands of overwintering ducks. This is a great nature walk for beginners and long-time birders alike. Kids too! (Gets them away from the TV.)

The dates are: September 22, October 20, November 10 and December 8, 2001.

All Eco-Walks begin at 10 AM at the foot of Mehrhof Road in Little Ferry. We're asking our friends for a donation of $10 per adult and $5 per child. If you'd like to take part or to get more information, call Hugh at the Riverkeeper office (201-692-8440). I'm limiting each walk to 12 people so let me know right away and you'll be sure of a spot. See you in the field!
