BCUA Prevents Raw Sewage Discharge During Blackout

Having been very critical of the operations of the BCUA in the past, Captain Bill would like to commend the BCUA for their foresight and preparedness during the recent blackout. The following is a BCUA Press Release:

Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) Executive Director, Leonard R. Kaiser, is pleased to announce that the BCUA was able to prevent raw sewage from discharging into the Hackensack River during the recent blackout.

The BCUA treatment works and remote pumping stations lost electrical power for over forty (40) hours. According to Executive Director Kaiser, "we were prepared in advance of the blackout by performing scheduled maintenance and regular testing of standby emergency power generators. The BCUA's commitment to a preventive maintenance program resulted in continuous and satisfactory wastewater collection and treatment. The BCUA's Commissioners' foresight in providing the necessary resources to prepare for power emergencies should be commended."

Executive Director Kaiser also commended the BCUA staff who "worked tirelessly throughout the duration of the emergency to ensure adequate wastewater treatment, thereby preventing a public health emergency."
