Annual Friends celebration coming in October

The Fourth Annual Friends of the Hackensack Riverkeeper Awards Celebration and Benefit Auction will take place on Monday, October 27, 2003, from 6-9 p.m. at the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission. This year's event will honor Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ9th), Time Warner Cable's Channel 10 News, and Cathe and Jay Morrow of Rutherford as Friends of the Hackensack River. Steve Royka of Little Ferry will receive the Lisa G. Ryan Volunteer Award. "The group of people we are honoring at this event are the heart and soul of this organization's success."

Commissioner Susan Bass Levin of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs will deliver the evening's keynote address. Ms. Levin also serves as the head of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, and as such, she and her staff have worked closely with Hackensack Riverkeeper over the past year developing the new Master Plan. "The recently-introduced Master Plan for the Meadowlands preserves the marshes and ensures the economic health of the region without sacrificing one for the other - something many people said could never be done," said Capt. Bill.
