New Logo for Hackensack Riverkeeper®

By Cathe Morrow

You probably already know that Hackensack Riverkeeper®, Inc is a member of the Waterkeeper Alliance. In case you didn't though, we are doing some things to try and spread the word.

The Waterkeeper® Alliance is composed of more than 80 member organizations worldwide and is among the fastest growing grass-roots environmental movements. It is made of many "neighborhood watch" programs like Hackensack Riverkeeper®. It is an alliance which allows its members to share resources, experiences and techniques for protecting our environment.

What, you might ask, does all this have to do with a new logo? Well I'll tell you. Because it is in the best interest of all Waterkeepers to be recognized as a part of the Alliance, and in order to protect the Riverkeeper® trademark in the most effective manner, all members of the Alliance will be adjusting their logos to standardize the way that "Riverkeeper®" appears. The rest of the logo is up to the local organization, but the way Riverkeeper® is included will be the same from Waterkeeper® to Waterkeeper®. That way it will be easier for everyone to know immediately that the local organization is a member of the Waterkeeper® Alliance.

We didn't want to lose our phragmites graphic in the transition, so we enlisted the aid of my niece, Sarah Orlowicz, a graphic artist, to help us with the technical issues and mesh the existing graphic with the new Riverkeeper® font. How did we do? We are pretty happy with it, although we do have a sentimental attachment to the original.

This does not mean that Captain Bill will stop wearing the shirts, jacket, and hat with the historic logo. It only means that, going forward, everything we do will use the new logo instead.

Speaking of the original logo. Now is your last chance to have a piece of our history and purchase an item with our original logo. Check out our sale page and website.

Plans for New Office Space Continue

By Cathe Morrow

Last time, we let you know that we are in the process of finding a new home for our offices. We thought you might like an update on our efforts to relocate while helping to redevelop an urban area and create a front door presence in the watershed.

First the bad news - our hopes to maintain the current office at Fairleigh Dickinson University are not going to work out. Unfortunately, the university finds it necessary to use the space for other purposes. We continually hope to maintain a presence on campus in some fashion in order to continue our student outreach initiatives.

Now for the good news - we have signed a contract for the purchase of 231 Main Street in Hackensack.. We are now saddled with all the usual headaches involved in purchasing property (e.g. inspections, title searches, lawyers, etc.). We expect to close on the property in mid February. It's keeping us very busy since we are working hard to be in the new offices before cruise season begins again.

Currently the building is one large enclosed space. It will require some work before we can move in. We are in the process of determining exactly what we need in order to convert the space into our offices. We are looking at several different potential plans. We will need the help of plumbers, electricians, carpenters, architects, painters and anybody else who can lend a hand in general indoor construction or something as simple as moving. We already have volunteers to do the necessary cabling for phones, computers and the like. Think you can help too? Please call the office and we will be happy to put you on a list so we can get in touch with you directly once we are ready to get started.
