Hackensack Riverkeeper Team Riverkeeper plans third foray into extreme birding By Captain Hugh
Carola No, the Captain doesnt refer to my Coast Guard license. It refers to my being captain of Team Hackensack Riverkeeper for the worlds greatest birding event New Jersey Audubon Societys World Series of Birding (WSB). This year from 12:01 AM until 11:59 PM on Saturday, May 10, 2003, thousands of birders will scour the state of New Jersey to list as many bird species as possible. Among those thousands are me and my team mates: Stan Blumenfeld, Kerul Kassel and Tim Vogel (representing our corporate sponsor Shop Rite Supermarkets). While some teams literally bird from High Point to Cape May Point in search of their feathered quarry, well confine our efforts to the Hackensack River Watershed where last year we listed 110 species. We dont do it for fun; no WSBers do it for fun. We do it for cash your cash that goes to support the ongoing work of Hackensack Riverkeeper to preserve, protect and restore the Hackensack River Watershed. You can help by making a per species pledge. That way you can be part of the team without having to get up at 3 AM to listen for owls in Old Tappan. Not a bad deal if you ask me! Heres how it goes: Lets say Team Riverkeeper lists 100 species this year. If you pledge .25 per bird, youll be sent a letter and SASE for your tax-deductible donation of $25. If you pledged .50, then your donation is $50. Of course if youre one of those wonderful Dollarbird folks, then wed receive $100 from you! The amount is up to you. If you prefer, you can make a lump sum donation of whatever you wish. Either way youll be helping Hackensack Riverkeeper and your river in a BIG way. Last year we raised over $1000 on the WSB. With your help this year, lets make it $2000! And if you pledge by plastic youll be the first to receive the results and our thanks. Hugh, sign me up
to support Team Hackensack Riverkeeper in the 20th Annual WSB!
