Riverkeeper Environmental Scholarship Award
Applications
are now being accepted for this year’s award
Teaneck, NJ – Captain Bill Sheehan, Executive Director
of Hackensack Riverkeeper, the citizen-steward of the Hackensack River
watershed today announced the second annual offering of its Environmental
Scholarship Award. The science
departments of every high school in the watershed, which lies in parts of three counties (Rockland in New York; and
Bergen and Hudson in New Jersey), are invited to nominate one of their students
for the Award. “Last year, a generous
benefactor endowed the fund that allows Hackensack Riverkeeper to offer the
Award to a deserving, college-bound student,”
said Capt. Sheehan, “Every graduating senior who either lives or attends
high school within the Hackensack River Watershed is eligible to apply.”
The 2002 Award
consists of a $1000.00 scholarship which the recipient can use for the purchase
of books or other educational materials during his or her first year in
college. Applications can be submitted
on behalf of the student by his or her faculty advisor or guidance counselor
and each application will be reviewed by a review panel that includes Capt.
Sheehan, several Trustees of Hackensack
Riverkeeper and Program Director Hugh Carola. In deciding upon a winner, the
panel will look at each applicant’s academic achievements, environmental
extra-curricular activities and their plans for future studies.
Last year’s Environmental
Scholarship Award winner was Rebecca Nelson who graduated from Cresskill High
School in June 2001. Having been
accepted to attend three institutions of higher learning, Ms. Nelson chose to
attend the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia where she is
currently enrolled.
Application criteria are available from Hackensack Riverkeeper by
calling their outreach office at 201-692-8440 and speaking with Program
Director Carola or by visiting their Website at:

Applications must be postmarked no later than Earth Day, April 22,
2002. This year’s winner of the
Environmental Scholarship Award will be announced on June 1. “Once again, we at Hackensack Riverkeeper
will be happy to honor not only an excellent student, but a future leader of our
watershed community,” said Capt. Sheehan.
