HACKENSACK RIVERKEEPER ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
2002 Criteria and Application Guidelines
What the Award is. The Hackensack Riverkeeper Environmental Scholarship Award
has been established to assist college-bound high school seniors who excel in the study
of science and who plan to use their talents and expertise in the service of environmental
protection. Begun in 2001, one winner will be chosen from among this year's graduating class to receive the $1000.00 award.
Who can apply. Any graduating senior who either:
a. attends a high school located within the Hackensack River Watershed, or
b. resides within the boundaries of the Hackensack River Watershed
and who:
a. has been accepted by an accredited institution of higher education for the 2002 Fall Semester, and
b. Plans to either major or minor in one of the natural sciences, and/or
c. Can demonstrate a personal commitment to the environment.
The application procedure. The application must be submitted by the high school
on behalf of the student nominee. Each school may nominate one student for the Award.
We suggest that the nomination come from the science department through the student's
faculty advisor.
On high school letterhead, please list:
1. The student's name and contact information
2. The name of the nominating school and faculty contact information.
3. A 150-word essay (written by the nominee) discussing the reason why he or she should receive the Award.
Please enclose the following with the application:
1. A copy of the student's current high school transcripts.
2. A copy of the Letter of Acceptance from the college or university where the nominee will be attending classes in the Fall 2001 Semester.
3. A description of the student's extracurricular activities as regards environmental / conservation issues. (such as Environmental Club membership, BSA merit badges, participation in active conservation, membership in environmental organizations, applicable hobbies, etc.)

A Final Note. All applications will be reviewed by a panel of educators
headed by Hackensack Riverkeeper Trustee Ronald Vellekamp.
The winner of this year's Hackensack Riverkeeper Environmental Scholarship Award will
be announced on June 1, 2002 and featured in the summer issue of Hackensack tidelines,
the official publication of Hackensack Riverkeeper.
